Light Notes #12: Charriol, March 2021

Our most recent content shoot for Charriol Philippines, under Jigso Digital Solutions.

One of the challenges when shooting for a jewelry brand is literally how tight your frame must be to showcase the products. Especially in this day and age where even the biggest campaigns generate the highest view count from mobile devices, there is risk of the products drowning in the shot just by mere focal length. This is where lighting comes in greatly, and how the model (perfectly shown by Bronija) creates the proper positioning to put the products within the proper space.

This was a one light setup, using a Godox AD400 Pro with a bare bulb. The light was position at around 6ft pointing at a downward angle to replicate a bright afternoon light going through a window. The shadows were created by the wall Bronija rested her back on and the window grills of the space. Minimizing the distractions, I had a white cloth hanging at the other window (which I ended up not even including in the shot); this also served as a softer counter light. A white reflector was placed right beside me to give additional fill light at the front of the frame.

When shooting for brands that have very sensitive products, you really must have an intelligent team to help build the final shot. Meg, Nicole, Raf, and I have been doing the content for Charriol for more than 5 years, and it’s our job to call each other out if the styling, makeup, photography, and direction do not give the spotlight to the jewelry. When that balance is hit, we can literally take a step back and take a wider shot without fear of losing the product.
